Cody, Wyoming
Very reluctantly we took our time leaving the Big Horn Mountains. Great fishing, wonderful scenery and cool weather kept tugging at our hearts. However, we had to leave if we were to continue to Cody, WY.
On the way we stopped at Shell Creek Canyon and Falls. While the falls were impressive, there was not much else to keep us here so off to Cody we went. We wanted to boondock prior to Cody, but the weather was hot and very few places seem appealing.
The geography of Wyoming dictates the weather. If one is in the mountains it is cool. If one is in the basin, temperatures are from 90-100 degrees (but virtually no humidity). Cody is still in the basin, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. There were several things we wanted to see and do in Cody so our first task upon arriving was to find a campground. Fortunately we found a site very near the center of the city. I say fortunately since all three campgrounds were full (it seems hordes of people are still coming and going from Yellowstone, some of which were the 1.8 million motorcyclists returning from the 75 anniversary of Sturgis motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota) Since our truck camper can fit in a relatively small space, one campground could accommodate us.
This post proves general information and photographs to help us remember our time in Cody. Subsequent posts will detail some of the more in-depth outings of our stay, such as
- Having a beer at the Hotel Irma, the hotel built by William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody,
- Watch Cody’s version of Jefferson’s street shootout,
- Having dinner and beer at a micro-brewery,
- Spent two days at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West,
- Visiting Old Trail Town, and
- Meriam having a “wool fix” at a local store.
After entering the Natural History section of the Museum (it’s actually 5 museums in one), we decided not to photograph museum elements. I don’t like taking photographs of museum quality pieces (with the exception of a couple of items). How can a photographic lens capture the stories of masterpieces. Meriam came up with a wonderful idea on how to share and capture our memories of the beauty and complexity of this museum (see our posting on the museum.)
Editor’s Note: Meriam will not let me “pull the wool over your eyes” regarding the photographs of the wolves. I wanted to post them as a “real world” encounter, not a photograph from the museum…actually I would have “come clean” later anyway.

While in the Cody camping ground this “bus” was parked nearby. Can you believe this? It is a Mercedes Benz, of with only 74 were made, all custom. The folks in this bus were from the East Coast. Note the slots for sleeping accommodations. Now the bad news. It’s A/C went out just after the trip began.

The magnificent cherry wood bar in the Irma Hotel, given to Buffalo Bill by Queen Victoria.

Check out the motorcycle. Because of the 75th anniversary of Sturgis, we saw more kinds of motorcycles than one can imagine.

Chomp, chomp…

Are these wolves magnificent or what?
Meriam astride the map of Big Horn Basin. I didn’t realize she was that big! (Did I say that?…)
