Casco Bay Mail Boat Run

Casco Bay Mail Boat Run

During some of her research on Maine, Meriam found this interesting boat tour. Seems for just $14, you are able to ride the boat that delivers mail to a number of islands in Casco Bay. Such a deal! Regular tour boats of the Portland, ME harbor cost significantly more and all one gets to see is the harbor. So off we go to find where the mail boat departs.

This was a really neat tour. It lasted for a little over 3 hours. The weather was great and the waters glass smooth. In fact, the captain said he had never seen it so smooth. He commented they often have swells of 7-8 feet!

In addition to some great shoreline scenery, we watched as a crate of beer is loaded onto the mail boat, lumber off-loaded on one of the islands, a golf cart loaded aboard for the return trip and listened while the captain gave a facts and history of the islands.

We also watched a number of lobster fishermen dropping and loading their precious cargo of lobsters — lobsters, lobsters everywhere — with a unique glimpse of island living.
