Creston – A World Class Fruit and Vegetable Capital

On our return to the US from visiting Nakusp, we passed again through Creston. The cherries were still ripe, as well as plumbs and peaches. Feeling it was our American duty, we stop and several fruit stands and stocked up on various fruits and some vegetables…a real chore, but someone had to do it!

NOTE: As you review the following photographs, please note the prices you see for the fruit, etc. are in Canadian dollars…significantly less than the American dollar.

These flats of fruit are hand sorted so that each flat consists of fruit with the same quality and ripeness.
These cucumbers are definitely above the norm. This is our second time purchasing from this stand.
More fruits and vegetables.
And more!
How about this cutie, a young Mennonite child eating a peach…they train them young to enjoy fresh fruit. There appears to be a large Mennonite settlement in the area.
Part of Meriam’s cache. If we were closer in time to returning home, she would most certainly have crammed many more boxes in the truck/camper.
While in the Creston area, we speculated as to a reason for such fertile land. Obviously, ages ago, glacier activity carved out the valleys from the mountains. In the process, they deposited a huge amount of fertile soil in the area. But as we drove south to the border, we came across this sign. It seems that the dreams of humans helped speed along the reclamation process.
A view of a portion of the reclaimed land.
Lastly, another of the pleasures of this area is the abundance of ancient, natural hot springs. We took advantage of several soaks. Above is the Ainsworth Hot Springs Pool and it associated Hot Springs Cave…most unique.
The Hot Springs pool in White Sulphur Springs, our favorite.
